For several years now, Charlotte leadership has been grappling with a couple of facts. We know our senior population in North Carolina is increasing at an accelerating rate and is predicted to more than double in the next 20 years. The good news is that, according to a recent Charlotte Post story, developers are trying to fill this gap with about 1,000 age restricted units in the last few years and over 2,800 units coming this year. Yet, as many demographers and people in the senior housing industry will tell you, there is a rapidly growing gap for affordable senior housing. We see this at Kavod, where we have had to temporarily freeze our waiting list when grew to over 250 individuals. Our residents are typically at the lowest income levels, but there is another group that is struggling to find housing. They are “too rich” to live at Kavod but “too poor” to live in market-rate housing. These seniors would like to live in a congregate setting with some basic support services, but increasingly cannot afford to do this.
Part of our strategic plan is to investigate what might be possible for us to develop. There are so many questions to answer: How do we define affordable? What types of rents would we charge? How large would the units be? Where would they be located? What type of support services would we offer? Where can you find the best Home Care in Charlotte and the list just goes on. Pay special attention to areas where you walk frequently like pathways to and from the bathroom, bedroom, and kitchen. Consider installing nightlights and remember to keep a flashlight handy at all times in case the power fails. 10. Medication. Follow directions! Failure to take medication properly is a major cause of falls and fall-related injuries. So take your medication as directed, on time, and at the dosage prescribed. Do not skip medications. Report any side effects or negative reactions to your doctor.
